Does the rear spindle nut turn clock wise or counter clock wise on a Mercury Villager?

I am trying to take off the hub asemble on a 94 murcury villager. I have a 36mm socket on a breaker bar with a pole for leverage, but it won't break free. I was woundering if it turns bacwards?
