Need help setting the timing on y ka24e 240sx engine?

so i have just finished rebuilding my ka24e engine from the ground up and I'm not sure how to set the ignition timing since i did not mark it before i pulled it to replace parts, i know the rotor needs to point toward the #1 cylinder but im not sure what direction the half circle (D looks like a capital d) is supposed to be pointing, when i install the timing cover, the crank gear forces the drive spindle for the distributer to turn clockwise about a quarter turn. is it supposed to do this? and if so, do i have to turn the spindle counterclockwise a quarter turn from where i want it before i install it? i would have a mechanic do it for me but my car is about 40 miles from the nearest shop and i have no means to tow it, any help?
